Sayre Highway is one of the major national highways in Mindanao, traversing the mountainous areas of Bukidnon and serving as a vital transportation corridor connecting Northern and Southern Mindanao.
Challenge
Due to the highway’s rolling to steep terrain, sections of the roadway are susceptible to soil erosion, slope instability, and landslides, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. As traffic demand and road development continue to increase along the corridor, the implementation of appropriate slope protection measures became necessary to maintain roadway stability, ensure the safety of motorists, and protect adjacent infrastructure from potential slope failures.
Solution
To address these conditions, a reinforced soil slope (RSS) system was implemented as the proposed solution. The system utilized layers of geosynthetic reinforcement integrated within compacted fill material to enhance the shear strength and overall stability of the slope mass. The reinforced soil slope was designed to accommodate the required roadway geometry while minimizing the risk of slope failure, surface erosion, and soil displacement caused by heavy rainfall and prolonged weather exposure. In addition, the solution provided a more economical and constructible alternative compared to conventional retaining structures, while still maintaining structural integrity and long- term performance suitable for the project conditions.
Products Used
• StrataGrid Composite Geotextile
• Strata NW 150 Nonwoven Geotextile
• MS 65WGB Woven Geotextile Bag
• MS 3D PP Erosion Control Turf Mat

Installation Methodology
Construction started with clearing and preparing the slope to create a stable foundation for the wall system. Afterwards, drainage and reinforcement materials were installed, while soil was carefully placed and compacted in layers to strengthen the structure. In addition, protection measures were incorporated at the base and surface of the slope to minimize erosion and water damage. As a result, the completed system provides a durable and long-term solution for slope stability and protection.
