The mountainous terrain and coastal environment of the Province of Romblon increase the need for reliable and sustainable slope protection measures to mitigate erosion and slope instability.
Challenge
The slopes in the Province of Romblon are susceptible to rockfall hazards due to their steep terrain, exposed rock faces, and continuous weathering. Periods of intense rainfall can loosen fractured rock masses and dislodge unstable boulders, increasing the risk of falling rocks onto roads and nearby communities. In some areas, the absence of adequate slope protection and rockfall mitigation measures may further increase the likelihood of rockfall events, posing risks to public safety, transportation, and surrounding infrastructure.
Solution
As a solution, an Erosion Control Mat with High Tensile Wire Mesh System was installed to provide both surface erosion protection and rockfall mitigation. The erosion control mat minimizes soil erosion and promotes vegetation growth, while the high tensile wire mesh contains loose rock fragments and prevents falling rocks from reaching roads and nearby areas. The system conforms to the natural slope profile, preserves existing vegetation, and provides a durable, cost- effective solution with minimal site disturbance.

Installation Methodology
The installation begins with the removal of loose rocks and debris while preserving existing trees and vegetation. Due to its flexibility, the high tensile wire mesh conforms to the natural slope profile, eliminating the need for unnecessary tree removal. Where required, crest and toe trenches are prepared, followed by the installation of the erosion control mat and the high tensile wire mesh with the required overlaps. The system is then secured and inspected to ensure compliance with the approved design and project specifications.
